Here are some facts about autism:
- Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder that affects communication, social interaction and social imagination (not creativity, being able to think/predict what might happen and cope with changes).
- People with autism can have a learning disability and/or mental health condition as well as their autism, but this does not mean that autism falls into either of these categories.
- There is a wide autism spectrum, which ranges from 'classic autism' to 'high functioning autism' and Asperger's Syndrome. Verbal language and communication are not necessarily a good indicator of an autistic person's understanding.
- People do not 'grow out' of autism, although they can develop skills and strategies to help them as they get older.
